Wilson Lake Watershed-Based Protection Plan

Wilton, Maine – An updated Watershed-Based Protection Plan for Wilson Lake outlines strategies for long-term watershed protection and water quality improvements on this picturesque lake in the western mountains.

Following the successful completion of a watershed survey for Wilson Lake, Varnum Pond, and Pease Pond in 2024, Ecological Instincts was asked by the Friends of Wilson Lake (FOWL) to help prepare an updated Watershed-Based Protection Plan (WBPP) for Wilson Lake. The previous plan was prepared by Ecological Instincts in 2017.

The updated WBPP outlines strategies for addressing nonpoint source (NPS) pollution identified in the Wilson Lake watershed survey over the next 10 years. The plan also includes strategies to prevent new sources of NPS pollution in the watershed, educate watershed residents about water quality issues, build funding and capacity for protection efforts, and monitor water quality and watershed conditions over the next 10 years. Funding sources and a schedule for each action was also outlined in the action plan. The updated plan allows FOWL and the town to be eligible for state and federal watershed protection grant funding.
